An exceptional Edwardian shop display cabinet by J. S. Fry & Sons, dating from 190s to the early 1910s.
Constructed in richly toned mahogany, the cabinet features a single glazed door and glazed side panels, allowing light to pass through the interior and making it ideal for display. The upper section is fitted with its original reverse-painted glass signage, boldly decorated with “Fry’s Chocolate” and cocoa pod motifs, surmounted by the gilt lettering “Makers to the King” a reference to Fry’s Royal Warrant during the reign of Edward VII.
The cabinet is topped with with a restrained overhang moulding and stands on a moulded base. Internally, the cabinet offers open shelving, originally intended for the display of boxed confectionery or luxury chocolate goods at counter or wall level.
This piece would have been used in a grocer’s, confectioner’s, or specialist retailer, designed to both advertise and securely display Fry’s products. Today, it works equally well as a striking display cabinet in a retail interior, kitchen, bar, or private collection.
We believe that the hand painted writing has been retouched over the years, making it more of a recent addition.
